Benefits of learning new skills

It is said that learning has no age bar. And when a parent is a student too, parenting and learning become fun. I met with my childhood, so can you!

Another milestone achieved! Till last week, I was struggling in the swimming pool, trying to reach the end of the pool while maintaining my balance. But today, I can proudly say that I have learnt swimming.

I could not picture myself as a swimmer the day I started attending classes at the local club. But now, I am swimming from one end of the pool to the other. Though I still have to gather courage to dive and swim underwater but with my son helping me learn breathing, I think I hopefully will.

Are you wondering why learning the sport at such a late stage in life? While I was growing up, we did not have swimming classes or clubs near where we lived. And then studies, marriage and motherhood happened. My hobbies always remained on the back burner. Bringing up my son, taking care of the family and then building a career soaked up my energy.

When my son was about 5, I enrolled him into activity classes, and then the student in me woke up. I started itching to learn new skills. I have always loved dancing and playing sports but could never learn them professionally. Since I did not have time for regular lessons, I started small. After numerous trials and errors, I began attending weekend dance classes at the center where my son went for music lessons. I was slow and I took time but it gave me immense satisfaction when I cleared the first level of Kathak – the Indian classical dance form. And then swimming happened. Now, I have decided to keep practicing, as many times a week as I can.

This self-realization taught me the importance of learning throughout our lives. It doesn’t matter what we learn, how we perform or what others say. What is significant is the fact that it keeps us engaged, interested and stress-free. We keep in good mental and physical form, and feel generally content and happy. Try it out, it works. And it would be icing on the cake if we can compete in the activity.

A happy parent guarantees a happy child. We should definitely try this fun way of parenting. It is exciting as well as humbling when we are learning a hobby along with our children. I am sure if we try really hard, we can find a way to learn an interest we love. It will require self-discipline, getting up early mornings and better time management. But to gain something, some amount of effort is needed. Isn’t it?

Let me know your experience. Enjoy the journey of learning, the goal will present itself sooner or later!
